The musical tells the story of a poor Jewish family living in war-torn Russia in 1905. One of the characters clashes with her father when she chooses a husband on her own instead of having one chosen for her, as was tradition at the time.

“It’s my favorite musical of all time,” Freeman said. “It features the ensemble; there are not a lot of solos, but there are a lot of group numbers.”
