Macomb Township Champ Prepares to Defend Title at 2013 Regional Spelling Bee

Nate Britton won The Macomb Daily Spelling Bee last year and went on to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

The Macomb Daily Regional Spelling Bee's 2012 champion will return to the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts this Sunday to defend his title and compete for a second trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

At age 11, Macomb Township's Nathaniel F. Britton, became the youngest winner in The Macomb Daily Spelling Bee's history.

With that win, the then fifth-grade student at Peace Lutheran School in Shelby Township earned one of 278 spots at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Now a sixth-grade student at Peace Lutheran, Britton has once again won his school's title and with that a chance to compete in The Macomb Daily Spelling Bee for a second year.

Fellow Macomb Township resident Jenna Peppers, who attends St. Mary Catholic School as an eighth grader, will participate in her third-straight Macomb Daily bee this year, according to the newspaper.

The bee will take place Sunday, Feb. 24, at the Macomb Center for Performing Arts in Clinton Township. The winner will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee May 28-30.
