MEAP Scores Show Steady Performance in Macomb Schools

Most Chippewa Valley and L'Anse Creuse students met or exceeded proficiency levels set by the state in math, reading, science and social studies.

Chippewa Valley and L’Anse Creuse students scored much the same in 2010 as they did in 2009 on the Michigan Department of Education’s MEAP test, according to results released Thursday.

The Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) is a standardized test given annually to grades 3-9 to measure the level of student learning.

An initial review of the 2010 MEAP scores for Chippewa Valley and L’Anse Creuse school districts shows students in grades 3-9 performed relatively the same as in 2009. From overall district scores per grade to specific testing areas and individual schools, the scores are broken down in a variety of ways.

The overall scores for both Chippewa Valley and L’Anse Creuse remained in the 80s and 90s, with most students meeting or exceeding the level of proficiency demanded for their grade. Depending on grade level, students are tested in math, reading, writing, social studies or science.

In Chippewa Valley, many of the math scores increased incrementally from 2009 for the district as a whole, while reading scores dipped ever so slightly. Grades 4 and 7 were tested in writing and only slightly more than 50 percent of the students tested met or exceeded the proficiency levels set by the state.

L’Anse Creuse scored similarly to Chippewa Valley, but saw math scores increase slightly in grades 5-8 and reading scores dip in grades 6-8. Grades 4 and 7 recorded writing scores of 58.4 and 63.6 percents, respectively.

"L'Anse Creuse has scored, on average, at or above state average," said Michelle Irwin, L'Anse Creuse senior director for community relations and programs. "In areas where there are slight dips, we will continue to work on strategies that align with best practices, through our school improvement process."

Tables showing the percentage of students in each grade that met or exceeded the test in the list subjects are available on the MDE website.
