Meeting Minutes: Science Olympiad Kudos and District Contracts

The Chippewa Valley Board of Education will contract with Pepsi Beverages Company for its beverage services rather than Coca-Cola Co., its current provider.

Not a spare seat could be found at the start of the June 6 Chippewa Valley Board of Education meeting.

The overflow was largely due to the recognition ceremony held in honor of district students who participated in this year’s Science Olympiad competitions.

The board recognized these students' achievements along with the winners of the district's Color21 SmartBoard Technology Coloring Contest before tackling the issues of security and beverage contracts for the district.

Change was the mood of the contract discussions as the board voted unanimously to contract security and beverage services with new providers.

On the security end, the board voted to contract with Strategic Protection Group for one year's service, plus four possible one-year renewals—an annual cost of $166,739. Strategic Protection Group would provide security guard services at the high schools and athletic events.

By contracting with Strategic, the district will see a 17.9 percent price reduction over the current district provider, Advance Security. Funding for this service will come form the general fund and athletic budgets.

In beverage, the board voted to end its relationship with Coca-Cola Co. in favor of a three-year exclusive, districtwide contract with Pepsi Beverages Company. The contract with Pepsi is expected to generate approximately $350,000 for the district during the three years of service.

"With all these cuts, any time we have a chance to generate more revenue we should go for it," said Trustee George Sobah.

In other district news, the board recognized the retirement of three faculty and staff: Chippewa Valley High School media specialist, Kay Smith; Spanish teacher, Linda Eugenio Vrana; and librarian, Judy Posner.
