New Haven Early College Program Offers Students 2-for-1 Diploma, Degree

A new program at New Haven High School will allow students to receive their diploma and associate's degree in four years, free.

It takes most students four years to finish high school and another two to pursue an associate’s degree, but a new program offered New Haven High School will allow students to earn both simultaneously.

Beginning this fall, students attending New Haven High School will have the opportunity to earn both their high school diploma and an associate’s degree in four years.

Partnering with Macomb Community College and Oakland University, New Haven will provide this program free of charge to all students.

In September, one class period will be added to the school day allowing students to take 14 elective courses over the course of their four years in high school. While those electives are at the discretion of the individual student, all 14 can be taken for college credit.

Some of the courses will be offered at the high school, while others will be at MCC or OU’s Macomb Campus.

“Previously, we offered a similar Early College opportunity, but it took five years. Now, by extending the school day, we can make it better and offer an Associate’s Degree in four years while a student is in high school,” said Carl Wagner, New Haven High School principal, in a prepared statement. “This is a wonderful opportunity for students to earn college credit and even an entire college degree.”

With this new program in place, students in the Class of 2016 have the potential graduate high school with both their diploma and associate’s degree in hand.
