New Haven to Become Schools of Choice in 2011-12

New Haven Community Schools announces it will participate in Schools of Choice and open its district to Macomb County students in the 2011-12 school year.

The educational options of Macomb County students will expand in the 2011-12 school year to include New Haven Community Schools as Schools of Choice.

Since 1996, the New Haven Board of Education has chosen not to participate in the schools of choice market.

However, the board recently reversed its decision to allow the district’s participation on a limited scale.

For the 2011-12 school year, New Haven will allow students from other Macomb County districts to attend school in the district.

“It was the right time to make this decision,” said Keith Wunderlich, New Haven superintendent, in a release. “There were two factors that helped us make the move to Schools of Choice. First, the proposed cuts from the governor forces districts to look at alternatives for generating revenue. Second, we are proud of the education we have to offer students and their families.”

New Haven is one of only two school districts in Macomb County that does not currently participate in Schools of Choice.

“We have great schools and we’ve worked hard this year to improve,” Wunderlich said. “We get calls all the time from families who want to send their children to New Haven. Until now, we haven’t been able to accept them. Now, we can.”
