VanPoppelen Stands Out as Strong Swimmer, Stronger Leader

L'Anse Creuse North senior makes state cuts in the 50 freestyle and three relays.

Ryan VanPoppelen nailed two of his goals this swim season for . 

He broke the school’s 50 freestyle varsity record and qualified for the state meet in that race.  

In addition, the Crusaders’ captain is a valuable member of the Division I state relay teams for the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

“Ryan worked extremely hard these past four years to attain his goals of breaking the 50 free varsity record and qualifying for the state meet this year,” said LCN varsity swimming coach Mike Owensby. “In addition, his leadership helped encourage the other swimmers that they could make the state cuts in all three relays. He was an instrumental reason for them making the cuts and going to the state meet.”

    There are a number of really great teachers at LCN and that makes it impossible to choose just one.

    Confident, determined, enthusiastic
  4. What are your hobbies outside of swimming?
    I like weight lifting, jet-skiing and just hanging out.
  5. What are your plans after graduation?
    I will most likely go to Grand Valley State University for engineering and try out for the swim team there.
