Approximately 10 million Americans, or 2-4% of the population, are challenged by fibromyalgia, a chronic pain disorder that can be disabling. People with fibromyalgia currently wait on average 5 years for a diagnosis. They are often told nothing is wrong with them as fibromyalgia is not visible and cannot be seen on standard lab tests. Research now shows that the structure of the brain changes due to the chronic pain state. It is critical that people receive a diagnosis early and begin on appropriate therapy. “Fashion & Brews” was founded to raise public understanding of fibromyalgia and funds for the Fibromyalgia Association of Michigan’s programs.

Event Co-Founder Sharon Waldrop, Founder and President of the Fibromyalgia Association of Michigan said, “This event is the first of its kind in the Metro Detroit area for fibromyalgia. It is exciting to work with our great community partners to raise fibromyalgia awareness. It has been a dream of mine to engage the community in helping to raise awareness for this complex illness just as people gather to support cancer, diabetes, etc.” In 1996 at the age of 24 Waldrop was bed-ridden with fibromyalgia. In 1997 she founded the Fibromyalgia Support & Education Group at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital under the guidance of the Arthritis Foundation. The Fibromyalgia Association grew out of the support group in 2003. When Waldrop was diagnosed she thought her life was over. She feared she would not walk again, have a career or get married. Waldrop has gone on to achieve all of those things and much more. Her passion is helping people with fibromyalgia reclaim their lives too.
