Dakota Boys Roll To State Title, Lady Cougars Capture District Crown

Local wrestlers have strong showing at state finals, while boys hoops squads prepare for postseason openers.

It’s a crazy-busy stretch here for the Pick of the Week staff, with all kinds of playoffs under way and a slew of seasons coming to an end. 

That said, it’s also a very exciting time for prep sports fans. 

With that in mind, let’s take our weekly look back at the week that was, and check out the week that lies ahead.

  • Kudos to (third place at 140 pounds), Kenny Seelye (seventh place at 130 pounds) and Jake Johnson, who turned in stellar performances at the state wrestling finals last weekend. Lutheran North’s Eric Hecker also had a strong showing, finishing eighth at 171 pounds.
  • captured the district title last Friday with a 46-25 victory over L’Anse Creuse North. Nice job, girls.
  • Kudos to for winning the Division 1 state title last Friday. The team had to beat a very tough Westland John Glen squad to earn the crown. Shawn Worth’s 269 led the Cougars in the title game. The following day, at the individual finals, Dakota’s Brad Berak advanced to the round of 16 before bowing out of the tourney.

Looking Ahead

  • The Lady Cougars take their regional title hopes to Grosse Pointe North March 8 against Ford II. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. 
  • The boys teams get their own state championship drive under way this week, with LCN and Dakota competing for a district title at Anchor Bay. The Crusaders meet up with the host school in the district opener at 7 p.m. March 7, while Dakota awaits the winner of the L’Anse Creuse/Port Huron Northern game. The Cougars suit up March 9 at 5 p.m. Meanwhile, Lutheran North travels to Armada March 7, where they will square off against Almont High at 7:30 p.m.
