Baby It's Cold Outside: Warm Up Your Wardrobe with Functional Winter Fashions

It's getting colder outside, but these great winter fashions will help you look amazing while staying warm.

As the weather grows colder, it’s important to alter the wardrobe with the changing temperature. There’s no denying it--winter is on its way. So rather than fret, get yourself some cozy clothing items and brave the brutal weather with style and a smile.

During Michigan winters, outerwear is just as important the outfit underneath. Invest in cute winter necessities to make a statement while keeping out the wind chill.

The peacoat remains one of the top trends in outerwear this winter. Available in a variety of colors and prices, these jackets are great for men and women. Wool gives an air of sophistication, while providing insulation and an opportunity to layer over warm clothes.

Stores like Macy’s and JCPenney carry pea coats at higher prices, but take advantage of upcoming holiday sales (like Black Friday!) and you may find yourself a great deal. Young women can pair one of these coats with a soft scarf, mittens and a cute pair of faux fur-trimmed boots to sparkle on a grey day.

A down jacket is also important to have in the wardrobe. Whether you are a student facing the freezing campus, or someone who spends a lot of time outdoors, these coats provide warmth to their wearer on below-zero days. Young men and women can stop at Parisian or Kohl’s to pick up this awesome outerwear essential at an affordable price.

The scarf is the next most important item to have in one’s wardrobe this season. Not only is it a major fashion piece, but it makes a big difference on a chilly day. From Target to Charming Charlie and Urban Outfitters, there are a variety of scarves out there to match any outerwear.

Now you’re almost ready to face the arctic weather, but don’t forget the matching hat and mittens to accompany a great outerwear ensemble. Knit caps and berets are great for keeping warm and protecting the hairstyle through brutal winter weather. Choose a woolen one for warmth or add extra style by picking out a hat with embellishments like flowersfaux fur, or feathers.

What you wear underneath, however, is just as important. Cardigans provide that extra level of warmth to avoid chills on wintry weekends. Old Navy famously held their “cardi-party” a few years ago, and still carry the great style at an amazing price. Stores like Kohlsand Target also have many warm sweaters at cool prices, so you can make a statement while savoring your budget.

Young men should consider investing in thermals. These tops are stylishly sophisticated and keep a man warm on a freezing day. Pac Sun and American Eagle offer these in a variety of colors and patterns.

So as the temperature continues dropping, remember these simple guidelines. You don’t have to spend a lot to insulate this winter, and there’s no reason not to look hot even when the weather is cold.
