Nice Nails: Manicure Trends for 2012

One of the quickest, yet most dramatic ways to express yourself is through nail polish. So choose a color or design, and make a statement this season.

A cute top, awesome jeans, comfy moccasins, the right accessories. Your outfit may seem complete, but don’t forget one of the most dramatic and easiest fashion pick me ups–a manicure.

When it comes to nail fashion, there are many hot trends out right now. Dark shades remain a hit, in addition to patterns created from shatter polish or polish strips.

Solid colors are classic and simple, but still make a statement. Blue hues, purples, pastels and nudes are trendy in 2012, while red remains chic as well.

If you can’t choose one nail color, however, you have some options.

The Ombre manicure is an optical allusion as nail color shifts subtly between shades. This look works using colors from the same shade family, either painting multiple shades on each nail, or over all nails.

Multi-color manicures are also hot. Last year brought the idea of painting a single nail differently, but this year is all about variety as wearers use a different shade on each nail.

In addition to multiple shades, one of the easiest ways to take your nail look to the next level is with a textured topcoat. Glitter adds an extra degree of glam for a night out or special event.

Recently I purchased Essie’s new Luxe Effects “Shine of the times.” This polish, intended to create “scintillating opalescence” transforms any nail shade into something new. It works very well with light colors to bring dimension, but also expands darker shades for added drama.

Shatter varnish is another simple way to give your nails a wild look with little effort. From silver to pink, red and even blue, these crackly lacquers are carried by many brands from Sally Hansen to OPI and China Glaze. The key is to apply a thin coat over dried polish for a wild, print-like effect.

If you are really good with paint, take on the trend of nail design. People are wearing everything on their nails lately, from animals to clothing.

At the Golden Globes, Zooey Deschanel dressed up her manicure in black tie by clothing her nails with tuxedos, standing out on the red carpet.

Local nail artist and Eisenhower junior Molly Galbreath does special designs for her friends, using nail art pens and polish. This hobby provides her with an artistic outlet, accentuating the nails of herself and friends with everything from city skylines to seasonal designs.

Short on time? Available in 40 shades, Sally Hansen’s Real Nail Polish Strips are great for a quick manicure without lengthy drying time. Other brands also carry this option, which works well and is actually pretty long lasting.

Regardless of your nail experience, take some fashion risks with your nails in the new year. Stand out and brighten up a dreary winter day by sporting one of these styles on your fingertips.
