Michigan's Second-Largest Fireworks Show is Wednesday in Rochester Hills

The Festival of the Hills fireworks show is Wednesday night at Borden Park. Here's what you need to know right now if you're thinking about attending this free event.

Didn't make it to the Target Fireworks in Detroit Monday? No worries, fireworks season has only begun and the state's second-largest show is set to take place even closer to Macomb this week.

The starts Wednesday at in Rochester Hills. The forecast calls for sun and clouds, but no rain. If you're planning to attend, here's what you need to know right now about the event:

  1. The festival officially begins at 6 p.m., but guests will start arriving early Wednesday morning to set up their spots. Don't worry — Borden Park is spacious and there's lots of room to set down your picnic blanket and chairs.
  2. Speaking of blankets and chairs, they are permitted in the park during the show. So are coolers and wagons and any kind of picnic food you think to bring. But here are the things that aren't allowed: pets, alcohol, sparklers or other fireworks, open fires or any grill except for one that is fueled by gas.
  3. There's lots to do besides watch the fireworks. There are bounce houses and other games for kids, plenty of food concessions and live music while you wait. There's also a playground, among other park amenities.
  4. The fireworks begin at 10:06 p.m. They are set to music and launched from a spot on the southeast corner of the park. There's really not a bad seat in the house.
  5. Plan ahead for parking and traffic. Handicap parking is available at the Hamlin Road entrance to the park. Otherwise, plan to walk. Parking spots in the neighborhoods around Borden Park typically fill up shortly after 5 p.m. Carpool if you can.

For Macomb Township families planning the trip out to Rochester Hills, keep in mind that many of the city's streets are under construction. If you're planning to take M-59, get off at the Dequindre Road exit and travel north on Dequindre to Hamlin Road. Turn left (west) on Hamlin to get to Borden Park. You should avoid most of the construction with this route.
