County Commissioners Honor Five 'Outstanding Volunteers' from Macomb

The Macomb honorees have donated more than 200 hours each to local charitable organizations, churches and community agencies in Macomb County.

The Macomb County Board of Commissioners will honor five Macomb Township residents June 7 as some of the county's most "outstanding volunteers" of 2012.

Deloris Smukal, Helen McCormick, Mary Blavatt, Julie Bronson and Dale Shomo donated more than 200 hours each to local charitable organizations, churches and community agencies in Macomb County.

  • Helen McCormick, 200 hours, Clinton Township Area Optimist Club
  • Mary Blavatt, 305 hours, Clinton-Macomb Public Library
  • Julie Bronson, 274 hours, Clinton-Macomb Public Library
  • Dale Shomo, 540 hours, Myasthenia Gravis Association

Hundreds of volunteers were nominated by local charitable organizations, veterans groups, churches, schools, hospitals and senior citizen facilities, but only 60 some chosen to be honored by the board.

Each honoree has donated at least 150 hours of his or her time to volunteer activities in 2011, and is either a Macomb County resident or has performed volunteer work which benefitted Macomb County’s citizens or communities.

“I have a great appreciation for the people who so generously give of their time and energy in this county. It takes a special kind of person to volunteer,” said Board of Commissioners Chair Kathy D. Vosburg, in a prepared statement. “The Board and I are thankful and proud of these individuals for their sense of service.”

The board will also present certificates of appreciation to volunteers from the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and Senior Companion Program during the recognition event.

The board meets 7 p.m. June 7 on the ninth floor of the Macomb County Administration Building, 1 S. Main, Mount Clemens.
