The Honaker family told Channel 4 that they hid in a friend's underground shelter in Moore, Oklahoma.
A family from Macomb Township survived the devastating Oklahoma tornado by driving to a friend's house and taking shelter underground, according to a Channel 4 report. Macomb native Sue Honaker, who moved to Moore two years ago with her husband and their five children, recounted the ordeal to the television station in Detroit. "It was horrible. People were slipping and sliding. All you could hear was metal crashing and then people screaming," Honaker said. Although her children are shaken, the family was unharmed and their home was not damaged. For information on how to help the tornado victims, visit the American Red Cross website.

With a wicked nor’easter now bearing down on areas that have yet to recover from Superstorm Sandy's first punch, schools across Macomb Township are organizing their own efforts to send some relief to the East Coast. "Everyone witnessed the devastation unfold on TV," said Seneca Middle School teacher Tami Wilkowski. "Although we had heavy wind, power outages, and damage, it is nothing compared to what the people on the east coast experienced." Wilkowski, along with student teacher Rob Liddell, have organized a hat and pop day at Seneca in an effort to raise money for the American Red Cross. "We can either shake our heads and hope for the best for these people, then switch channels on our remote, or we can do something about it," Wilkowski …

Employees help out, and you can, too
It's been said it's far better to have a neighbor who's near, than a brother who's far away, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Americans across the nation have proven to be the best neighbors and the strongest of families. This past weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in, packing two tractor trailers worth of food, water and supplies in Dulles, VA, and Baltimore. The donations are headed to Hurricane Sandy ravaged areas in New Jersey and Long Island. Want to join the relief efforts? Editor's note: This article was submitted by the Southeastern Michigan Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross. Hurricane Sandy has forced the cancellation of approximately 300 American Red Cross blood drives in 14 states along the East Coast, resulting in a shortfall of more than 9,000 units of blood and platelet donations. All eligible donors in unaffected parts of the country are encouraged to roll up a sleeve and give blood or platelets. “Just as Red Cross volunteers have mobilized to provide disaster relief and other emergency assistance, we are mobilizing blood and platelets donations to ensure patients have access to the potentially lifesaving blood products they need,” said Diane E. Ward, CEO for the Southeastern Michigan …

Macomb Township will be hosting an American Red Cross blood drive on July 26 at Town Hall on 25 Mile Road, east of Romeo Plank.
Those needing a little more incentive to face an American Red Cross needle may find it Thursday at Macomb Township's Town Hall blood drive where one lucky donor will walk away with a $500 gas card. With 50,000 fewer donations than expected in June, the Red Cross reports its blood supply has reached emergency levels. Due partially to the early summer and a lack of scheduled blood drives, this shortfall leaves the nonprofit with half the readily available blood products on hand now than this time last year. “Every day, the Red Cross must collect more than 17,000 pints of blood for patients at more than 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country. Of that, the Southeastern Michigan Blood Services Region must collect …

Local blood and platelet supplies are dangerously low, says American Red Cross.
The American Red Cross is asking anyone who is eligible to donate blood or platelets to do so as soon as possible, warning that local supplies are currently insufficient to meet the needs of our community’s hospitals in a timely manner. I can't even start to imagine what people go through with these types of events. I'm so glad you're all okay. I spend 5 months a year here in MI with sleep anxiety during tornado season. You just never know when it might by you. I've lived here in Macomb Twp. for 15 years and have seen 4 tornadoes come through the area; the closest one 1 1/2 miles away two years ago. I hope I never have to …   more ›
