Former candidate for Macomb Township treasurer Thomas Christ says a large majority of residents are “apathetic to township government due to the belief that there is a lack of inclusiveness to (the point of) exclusion from any commentary or feedback from the board.” In addressing the board of trustees Aug. 22, Christ, who lost to Treasurer Karen Goodhue in the Aug. 7 primary, said he was concerned by the primary's low voter turnout and the fact that “less than 4,000 votes selected the leaders of this township for the next four years.” Christ attributed this low turnout to a feeling of exclusion among township residents. “When a resident gets up to speak they feel either ignored, ridiculed or just plain shut down,” Christ said. “I would ask…

The millage passed narrowly with 50.5 percent of the vote in Macomb County.
Voters re-elected six of the seven board members currently serving Macomb Township, with the notable exception of Supervisor Mark Grabow who was defeated by Trustee Janet Dunn.
With three Republican candidates splitting the vote in Macomb Township's supervisor's race, 39 percent of the vote was enough to win Trustee Janet Dunn a term as Macomb's next supervisor. Dunn, 70, defeated incumbent Supervisor Mark Grabow Tuesday by a margin of only 515 votes. The third candidate, Charles Missig, received 29 percent of the primary vote. As there are no Democratic candidates to run against Dunn in the Nov. 6 general election, Dunn will be the township's next supervisor and the first female to hold this position. The Nov. 6 general election will see Juliana Sabatini (R) face incumbent Commissioner Fred Miller (D) in District 9, and incumbent Commissioner Joe Sabatini (R) take on challenger Jonathan Garstka (D) in District 13.
In District 9, incumbent Commissioner Fred Miller defeated challenger Bruce H. Brazen for the Democratic nomination by an 84.6 vote margin Tuesday. Miller, who was elected to his first two-year term in November 2010, will now face Republican candidate Juliana Sabatini in November. Juliana Sabatini ran uncontested for the District 9 Republican nomination, receiving 2,880 votes. District 9 covers Harrison Township and parts of Mount Clemens and Clinton Township In District 13, incumbent Commissioner Joe Sabatini won the Republican nomination by 63.1 percent of the vote, defeating challenger Kevin Karwowicz. The millage passed Tuesday with 80.8 percent of votes in favor of its renewal.
Macomb County voters overwhelmingly approved a six-year renewal of the county veterans' millage Tuesday, passing the tax of 0.04 mills with 80.8 percent of the vote. This millage was first approved by Macomb County voters in 2008 and, with the renewal starting in 2013, will be levied until 2018. Expected to raise approximately $984,560 in its first year of renewal, this tax will fund financial aid and services for county veterans and provide support for the Macomb County Veterans’ Services Department and Veterans’ Affairs Commission.

The Detroit Institute of Arts millage passed in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties on Tuesday.
As of 10 a.m. Wednesday, anyone in the tri-county area can visit the Detroit Institute of Arts for free. The former admission fee has been tossed to the wind thanks to voters in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties passing the Arts Authority Millage, more commonly known as the DIA millage, on Tuesday. Tri-county voters approved a tax of 0.2 mills for the next 10 years to fund the arts authority. “We feel wonderful,” said Annmarie Erickson, the DIA’s chief operating officer. “We want to thank voters throughout the area with coming out for such a strong showing of support. With the two candidates for House District 33 running uncontested for their respective party's nominations in the August primary, the focus now turns to Nov. 6, when voters will choose one to serve in the Michigan House of Representatives until 2014. Incumbent Republican Ken Goike received 6,928 votes Tuesday to Democrat Martha O'Kray's 3,514, with all 38 precincts reporting. Both Goike and O'Kray won their party's nominations and will battle for the House seat in November. Goike won his first term in November 2010, with 66.5 percent of the District 33 vote. Chuck Stadler defeated Jerome George Quinn to win the Democratic nomination. He will face incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Candice Miller in the Nov. 6 general election.
Chuck Stadler defeated Jerome George Quinn in the Democratic District 10 congressional primary, winning 61 percent of the vote. He will challenge incumbent GOP U.S. Rep. Candice S. Miller for her House seat in November. Stadler received 8,051 votes to Quinn's 5,145 with all 142 precincts reporting. Miller, who ran uncontested for the Republican nomination, is currently serving her fifth term after being first elected to office in 2002. The District 10 House seat will be decided in the Nov. 6 general election. These results are unofficial until confirmed by the Macomb County clerk.
With many precincts still reporting, Oakland County voters seem to be in favor of the DIA millage, while Macomb County's passage or rejection of the millage lies within a margin of 1 percent. Wayne County has yet to report its results.
With 39 percent of precincts reporting, Oakland County looks as though it will pass the Arts Authority Millage, commonly known as the DIA Millage. Since Oakland County started reporting its results, some 60 percent of voters have been in favor of the millage, with 65.1 percent of voters currently in support. Patch believes it is too early to call the results in Macomb County, as the difference between passage or failure of the millage is just 1 percent at the present time. With roughly 89.5 percent of precincts reporting in Macomb County, 50.2 percent of voters are in favor of the millage. At this time, Wayne County results are still pending.
