Utica Community Schools Braces for $22.5 Million Deficit in 2013-14

The district anticipates it will spend around $265.3 million in 2013-14, but take in only $239.6 million in revenue, according to early estimates.

Unless the district receives an unexpected windfall from the state, Utica Community Schools is looking at a $22.5 million to $25.7 million deficit for the 2013-14 academic year. With Gov. Rick Snyder due to unveil his third 2014 budget on Feb. 7, the district is making no assumptions about additional school aid funding and taking a hard look at its costs minus any cuts or added revenue. “We’re looking at what operating costs were in 2012-13 and what expenses would be if we kept staffing levels consistent and did everything the same (in 2013-14) as we do today,” said Stephanie Eagan, assistant superintendent for business and employee services. Taking into account the health care and retirement demands of the state as well, Eagan estimates …

I just learned an interesting fact.... Does anyone out there realize that Enviro-Clean (the company that UCS interviewed and almost hired for custodial services in your child's schools) hires many of their employees off of CRAIGSLIST? You have got to be kidding me. If Enviro-Clean hires off of CRAIGSLIST.....Where does the company that won the cleaning contract (GCA Services) hire there people …   more ›

Holiday Shopping: Spending Limits For Kids’ Presents?

How much is too much to spend on children and teens? We want to hear your thoughts, Macomb Township!

As the holiday shopping season goes into full swing, some people are maxing out their credit cards to pay for presents and others are setting budgets and sticking with them. The hottest gifts - the WiiU (around $350), iPad ($399 and up), laptop computers, and others - cost hundreds of dollars.   Scour just about any Facebook stream or stop in a local coffee shop and chances are you’ll hear parents debating the merits of setting spending limits. Or, you'll hear them lamenting about just how much they've already spent. The ideas for a perfect limit do seem to vary rather greatly. Some parents say $100 per child is more than enough. Others tend to lean toward much more generous figures. After all, there’s nothing like seeing a child’s eyes …

I think kids get more 'stuff' all year long these days, some with continuous bills (cells, tablets, etc.) How much to spend on Christmas depends how much you spent throughout the year, and monthly... and of course, how good the kids have been! Kids of late tend to have an entitlement attitude, and need to understand the reason/spirit in gift giving.   more ›

Chippewa Valley Spends $132 Million in 2012; Saves $16.7 Million for Rainy Day

Plante Moran gave Chippewa Valley Schools an "A" on its audit of the district's 2012 finances.

Federal dollars and property tax revenues were down in 2012, but Chippewa Valley Schools still managed break even and close out the year with $16.7 million in its rainy day fund. Plante Moran gave the district an unqualified opinion – the highest form of assurance that an institution’s finances are in order – in its recent audit of Chippewa Valley finances for the year ending June 30, 2012. “In school district terms, we would give you an A,” said Donna Hanson, CPA with Plante Moran. Taking in approximately $131.8 million in revenue in 2012, the district spent $132 million, with just under $104.2 million of that expense directed toward instruction and instructional support services that directly benefit students. As of June 30, the district…

Chippewa Valley Schools Back in Black for 2010-11

A recent Plante Moran audit of Chippewa Valley Schools’ 2010-11 finances shows the district on the plus side.

Although a recent audit of Chippewa Valley Schools’ 2010-11 finances shows the district on the plus side, district administrators such as Assistant Superintendent for Business & Operations Scott Sederlund believe this snapshot can be misleading. “Last year we got federal EduJobs money, about $3.5 million, but that was one-time money,” Sederlund said. “We do not have that money for this year. Our revenues typically exceed our expenditures by only a few thousand dollars. We would just break even.” Finishing the 2010-11 school year with total revenue just over $135 million and total expenditures just over $131 million, the district was able to deposit around $3.7 million into its rainy day fund. However, much of this extra $3.7 million was …

Michigan Credit Union Offers $25K in Grants to Members

Members of Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union can start applying for classroom grants on Sept. 1.

With school districts operating on reduced budgets this year, many teachers will rely on grants to enhance their students’ education. One of these grant opportunities is the Classroom Cash Grant through the Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union. The credit union plans to award more than $25,000 in grants to schools in Macomb and Oakland counties this year. “Some of the most memorable teaching experiences are not found in the regular curriculum,” said Peter Gates, CEO and president of MSGCU, in a release. “That’s why we encourage teachers to find unique, innovative classroom projects that inspire their students to embrace education. In return, we support their efforts by providing funding.” This is the sixth year of the credit union’…

New Haven Reduces $851,000 Budget Deficit by $130,000

The reduction was made possible by cuts in administration, a new teacher contract and increased enrollment.

A new deficit plan for New Haven Community Schools promises a 16-percent reduction in the budget deficit, which had been estimated at more than $851,000 earlier this year.  School officials presented the New Haven school board with the new plan at a special meeting this week. “Due to cuts in administration, a new teacher contract, increased enrollment and sound financial decisions, the deficit has been reduced by almost $130,000,” said Bob Randlett, who works with the business departments of both New Haven and L’Anse Creuse, in a release. According to New Haven calculations, the 2011-12 deficit had originally been estimated at $851,000 and with the new plan, has been reduced to $722,000. “We realize it’s still a deficit and we have a plan …

Supervisor: Budget Shortfall Won't Put Macomb Twp. 'That Far in the Red'

The Macomb Township Board of Trustees approved the budget for the 2011-12 fiscal year, and asked residents to be mindful that the budget is only a "projection" and both revenues and expenditures will change during the year.

With cities and towns across Michigan facing multi-million dollar budget shortfalls, Macomb Township Supervisor Mark Grabow said he is confident the 2011-12 budget approved on June 22 will again allow the township to have "one of the healthiest fund balances throughout the state of Michigan." The Macomb Township Board of Trustees approved the budget for the 2011-12 fiscal year at its meeting on June 22. Although no community members participated in the public hearing on the budget, Grabow and Clerk Michael Koehs took care to provide additional clarification in regard to the budget's projected $11 million shortfall. "I think it's imperative that we make a statement so that everyone is clear and understanding concerning the budget," Grabow …

Chippewa Valley Set to Spend $133 Million in 2011-12

Despite the loss of federal funding, reduced state aid and decreased property tax values, the district will have approximately $145 million in its 2011-12 budget.

Facing a loss of federal funding, reduced state aid and decreased property tax values, Chippewa Valley Schools is anticipating it will have approximately $145 million to spend in the 2011-12 school year. This is roughly $5 million less than the amount available in 2010-11. The $145 million figure is made up of the district's estimated local ($19.8 million), state ($103.6 million), federal ($5.2 million) and transfer funds for 2011-12 as well as the funds remaining in the 2010-11 budget ($15.7 million). However, this number will improve based on actual savings this year and the audit. Of this $145 million, $133.7 million will be used for instruction and support services, including basic programs, operation and maintenance costs, and to pay …
