A U.S. Geological Survey measurement taken just before 3 p.m. Thursday showed water levels between 9.75 feet and 12.56 feet from where the river passes Moravian in Clinton Township to downtown Mount Clemens.
Recent rains have caused the Clinton River to swell just shy of 10 feet where it crosses Moravian, and while this is about 6 feet under flood stage, it is one of the higher January levels in recent years, according to the National Weather Service. The torrential downpours of recent days are primarily responsible for the rising water levels, but frozen soil, which has prevented absorption, has caused mini lakes to form all across the county. The clean-up, organized by PTI Engineered Plastics, will take place from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday near 23 Mile and Romeo Plank.
The Clinton River is a major spillway into Lake St. Clair and inevitably the Great Lakes, and that’s only one reason why keeping the waterway clean is so important. Volunteers will descend on stretches of the Clinton River throughout the area Saturday, Sept. 8, to pick up debris, remove invasive species and stencil storm drains. Historically, more than 300 volunteers have participated in Clinton Clean-Up, according to the Clinton River Watershed Council. Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel dreams of making Lake St. Clair a popular recreation destination and tourist attraction. Macomb County officials outlined a plan Friday that would focus on environmental stewardship, economic development and quality of life while looking to develop economic opportunities and environmental quality for Lake St. Clair and the Clinton River.

The plan, drafted by a committee that included local, county and regional representatives, included a wide range of proposals from increased access to the waterfront to increased ecosystem restoration. The Clinton River Watershed Council is looking for volunteers to participate in the Annual Stonefly Search Saturday.
The Clinton River Watershed Council is looking for volunteers with an eye for bugs. Volunteers will help the council gauge stonefly larvae in the Clinton River, which is an indication of good water quality. Since the winter stoneyfly nymphs are one of the most sensitive of all aquatic macro invertebrates that live in rivers and streams, the bug's presence in the stream is an indication that the river is healthy and likely supporting trout and other fish. These insects are most active and easily found in the month of January when the water temperature is very cold and there is still plenty of leafy debris in the river bottom for stoneflies to forage on. State Rep. Anthony Forlini, R-Harrison Township, showed off Lake St. Clair Thursday afternoon to key members of the Michigan House of Representatives, as well as water and tourism groups, during an hour-long boat tour.
Impressed by stretches of inviting aqua waters, businesses and houses along the shore and scores of boats sailing the lake, state representatives are eager to push Lake St. Clair as a Pure Michigan attraction. The newly formed Macomb County Water Resources Advisory Council held its first meeting Wednesday.
Members of the Macomb County Water Resources Advisory Council met Wednesday for the first time. The 22-member council was created in May by Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel. The council will concentrate on tourism, recreation and supporting clean water efforts and economic development along Lake St. Clair and the Clinton River. "I'm extremely excited about working with this new panel," Hackel said of the council in a release. "We all agreed that it's not enough to identify problems, but how to identify and find solutions."
