Patch Readers Raise $5,512 to Fight Hunger in Metro Detroit

The Patch Fights Hunger initiative spurred 119 people in 30 Patch cities - including Macomb Township - to donate to Gleaners Community Food Bank this holiday season.

More than 16,500 men, women and children in Metro Detroit will have a warm, healthy meal provided by Gleaners Community Food Bank this holiday season—and it's all thanks to Patch readers. Readers from Macomb Township donated $137 to the cause.  Throughout the month of November, 30 Michigan Patch communities took part in the Patch Fights Hunger virtual food drive, raising funds for Gleaners. Gleaners distributes 100,000 meals each day to hungry people in southeast Michigan, and in the month of giving thanks, Patch partnered with the nonprofit to start the first-ever virtual food drive. Patch readers from across the region "shopped" Gleaners' virtual store and saw exactly what their donation would buy for a person or family in need. How much…

Leave Your Canned, Boxed Food on Your Doorstep Saturday, Macomb Township

The Boy Scouts distributed grocery bags across town this week as part of the annual Scouting for Food initiative.

You may have noticed an empty plastic bag hanging from your front door or mailbox this week.  It's part of the annual "Scouting for Food" initiative from the Boy Scouts of America; the scouts will pick up the filled bags of food beginning Saturday morning in Macomb Township. Here's what you need to know — and how you can help if you didn't happen to get a bag.

How to Help the Hungry in Macomb Township This Holiday Season

One in four Michigan children lives in poverty. In this season of being thankful and giving back, here are ways to help make others' holidays warmer.

The holiday season is a time of joy, and if one's lucky, of plenty. Sadly hunger continues to be a problem, with one in four Michigan children living in poverty and nearly half qualifying for free or low-cost school lunches. Some of these youngsters can only look forward to plenty of hunger pangs, but here at Patch we want to help. Patch.com has launched an online food drive, with all of its 30 Michigan sites participating. Patch is partnering with Gleaners Community Food Bank in this virtual food drive, and the goal is to raise $10,000 by Nov. 17 to help feed local families. Help Patch Fight Hunger in Macomb Township

Starting today, you can purchase and donate food to the Gleaners Community Food Bank during Patch's virtual food drive. Our goal is to collect $10,000 through Nov. 17.

The statistics are grim, especially for children. One out of four Michigan children lives in a household with food insecurity, meaning they do not always know where their next meal is coming from. In southeast Michigan, nearly 40 percent of more than 100,000 people receiving food assistance each week are children under age 18. Poor nutrition, particularly in the first three years of life, has profound implications on a child’s physical and mental health, development, academic achievement and economic productivity. Today Patch is launching an online food drive to raise $10,000 by Nov. 17 to feed families in your area. This is the first virtual food drive for the Gleaners Community Food Bank, and Patch is honored to be their first partner. …

Part-Time Pantry Struggles to Meet Full-Time Needs of Local Families

The food pantry at St. Peter Lutheran Church now serves 10 times as many families as when its doors first opened six years ago.

Every little bit helps. At least that’s the way the volunteers who run the St. Peter Lutheran Church Food Pantry in Macomb feel as they stock their shelves and open their doors to help those in need each month. “We do what we can to provide for them and this isn’t meant to be their sole source of food, it’s a supplement,” said volunteer Cheryl Borowski. She and her husband, Ed Borowski, live in Ray Township, but are members of  the church and in charge of the pantry. When it opened six years ago, there were 15 to 20 families getting help. Today, that number has soared. “We open the last Tuesday of each month from 9:30 a.m. to noon and we served 150 families, that’s almost 500 people, last month,” Cheryl Borowski said. The food pantry …

Don't Forget to Leave Canned Food Donations for Boy Scouts Saturday

Homeowners should leave nonperishable food donations on their doorsteps by 9 a.m. Saturday.

From first grade Tiger Cubs to 17-year-old Eagle Scouts, boy scouts of all ages will visit local neighborhoods this Saturday to collect donations for the annual Scouting for Food campaign. Collecting almost 400,000 pounds of food last year, the 2010 drive was the most successful Scouting for Food program in the history of scouting in Southeast Michigan. Last Saturday, local troops left thousands of plastic collection bags on the doorsteps of homes throughout Macomb Township. On Nov. 12, scouts will return to collect the bags. Donations will benefit Gleaners Food Bank. Homeowners should put donation bags on their doorsteps by 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12.
