It's a new year with new sets of orange barrels cropping up all over Macomb County. Here are the big road projects to keep in mind before you get behind the wheel. Overall, the county is scheduled to tackle more than $38 million in road projects this year. The county is also planning annual maintenance projects across the county from May 2013 to September 2013.

Shelby Township Police say a Sterling Heights woman ran a red light Monday night at 23 Mile Road and Hayes, hitting a minivan carrying a family of five, including a 3-year-old toddler. The Sterling Heights woman has also passed away.

The owner of the Corner Clock Restaurant on 23 Mile and Hayes Road holds back tears as he recounts the horrifying moments after a crash Tuesday that killed a 3-year-old girl and a woman suspected of drunken driving.
A woman and a 3-year-old girl died following an automobile accident Monday night. Moments after patrons at the Corner Clock Restaurant on 23 Mile and Hayes roads in Shelby Township witnessed an Oldsmobile driven by a Sterling Heights woman crash into a minivan at the intersection around 8:45 p.m., Dan Goad, the owner of the restaurant, sprang into action. Goad, a Shelby Township resident, couldn't hold back tears as he recounted the horrifying scene. "The van was full of a family. ... The driver of a vehicle that ran a red light last night at 23 Mile Road and Hayes, hitting a minivan carrying a family of five, has passed away. A 3-year-old child passenger in the minivan has also died.
A 3-year-old passenger and the female driver of a vehicle involved in a crash Monday night on 23 Mile Road have passed away, according the the Shelby Township police. The crash, which occurred around 8:45 p.m. at the intersection of 23 Mile and Hayes roads sent all six people involved, including three children, to the hospital. Police said the woman who died was driving an Oldsmobile west on 23 Mile Road when she ran a red light and hit a minivan traveling south on Hayes Road. There were five people in the minivan, an adult male and female and three children. Doug Goad, owner of the Corner Clock Restaurant at the corner of 23 and Hayes, said he was serving dinner when patrons in the restaurant screamed after witnessesing the crash. Goad …

The Shelby Township police said they are continuing their investigation into what caused a serious car accident on Hall Road and Hayes.
A Macomb Township teenage girl was seriously injured Wednesday evening in a two-vehicle crash on Hall Road and Hayes. The accident occurred in front of the Meijer parking lot at approximately 5:30 p.m. The teen was the passenger in one of the vehicles involved. She was transported to Henry Ford Hospital where she remains in serious condition. Firefighters told Patch two others were treated at the scene. The incident remains under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to contact Sgt. Cazabon at the Shelby Township Police Department at 586-731-2121 Ext. 423.
