Macomb Township Schools Rally Relief Efforts for Victims of Superstorm Sandy

Schools and students across Macomb Township are digging into their own pockets to assist recovery efforts on the East Coast.

With a wicked nor’easter now bearing down on areas that have yet to recover from Superstorm Sandy's first punch, schools across Macomb Township are organizing their own efforts to send some relief to the East Coast. "Everyone witnessed the devastation unfold on TV," said Seneca Middle School teacher Tami Wilkowski. "Although we had heavy wind, power outages, and damage, it is nothing compared to what the people on the east coast experienced." Wilkowski, along with student teacher Rob Liddell, have organized a hat and pop day at Seneca in an effort to raise money for the American Red Cross. "We can either shake our heads and hope for the best for these people, then switch channels on our remote, or we can do something about it," Wilkowski …

I hope all those workers that left the state had their absentee ballots. If not they will not be able to vote in Tuesday's election unless they are back home by then. Thank you for leaving on a moment's notice, but I hope you didn't have to give up your right to vote. Just one more reason we need internet voting.   more ›

Red Cross: Blood Donations Needed to Help Communities Affected by Hurricane Sandy

Red Cross urges blood donations in unaffected areas across the country as emergency responders assess damage from Hurricane Sandy. Use this list to find drives in Macomb Township this week.

Editor's note: This article was submitted by the Southeastern Michigan Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross. Hurricane Sandy has forced the cancellation of approximately 300 American Red Cross blood drives in 14 states along the East Coast, resulting in a shortfall of more than 9,000 units of blood and platelet donations. All eligible donors in unaffected parts of the country are encouraged to roll up a sleeve and give blood or platelets. “Just as Red Cross volunteers have mobilized to provide disaster relief and other emergency assistance, we are mobilizing blood and platelets donations to ensure patients have access to the potentially lifesaving blood products they need,” said Diane E. Ward, CEO for the Southeastern Michigan …

Hurricane Sandy's Winds Expected to Produce Record Energy at Endeavour Middle School

Students studying alternative energy in New Haven Community Schools are expecting to see record amounts of energy produced by the 60-foot wind turbine at Endeavour Middle School.

Winds associated with Hurricane Sandy may mean scattered garbage cans and downed power lines for some in southeast Michigan, but for students studying alternative energy at Endeavour Middle School, it's a unique opportunity to study their wind turbine as never before. Students at Endeavour are expecting to see record amounts of energy produced by their 60-foot wind turbine as Michigan feels the effects of the storm now pounding the East Coast. “Students are making some predictions about wind speeds and the amount of energy we’ll produce in the next few days,” said David Rayes, principal of Endeavour Middle School, in a prepared statement. “Not only are they learning some great math skills, it truly helps them understand how a national news…

How Long Will Food Last in the Fridge if You Lose Power?

Here are guidelines from the USDA regarding the safety of food in a refrigerator without power.

With Hurricane Sandy predicted to hit the East Coast hard today, losing power is a threat even in Macomb County as the National Weather Service predicts wind gusts up to 50 mph Monday and Tuesday. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service prepared a fact sheet for keeping food safe during an emergency, including losing power. The USDA says to "keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature." But, the refrigerator will only keep food safely cold for about four hours if unopened during a power outage, according to the USDA. A full freezer will hold the temperature for about 48 hours if full (24 hours of half full), the USDA says. The USDA emphasizes "never to taste food to determine …
