Dakota Collects 18,000 Cans for Kiwanis Food Baskets, Cougar Closet

Raising more than $5,000 and collecting almost 3,000 cans, the 2011 Dakota canned food drive was the most successful to date.

How many cans can a campus collect? At Dakota High School, the answer is 18,004. Last week, during the school's annual canned food drive, students, staff and administrators collected some 3,000 cans and more than $5,200 in monetary donations. With each dollar equal to three cans, the grand can total was 18,004. "We have a drive every single year and we set a goal," said Karley Rivard, senior class president. "Last year, we collected 12,000 cans. We wanted to do that or better. We wanted to make a difference in the community. Gleaners gave out 3.8 million pounds of food last year. There shouldn't be that in an urban community where families are so connected." Using social media, daily announcements and walking reminders in the form of T-…

Dakota Kicks Off Canned Food Drive for Kiwanis and Cougar Closet

Donations for Dakota High School's annual canned food drive will be accepted through Nov. 14.

“When was the last time you went to bed hungry?” To raise awareness of this week’s campus-wide canned food drive, Dakota High School students and staff are asking friends, family and peers this very question. For more than a decade, the Dakota campus has collected nonperishable food items and monetary donations for the Clinton Township Kiwanis Club, and more recently, the Cougar Closet, Dakota’s own community food pantry located in the ninth grade center. Although teacher and senior class advisor Gretchen Vermiglio believes last year’s record total of 3,969 cans and $4,589 will be tough to beat, she said this year's drive is off to a good start, with more than 180 cans and $500 collected on the first day alone. “I’m a little worried we …

Today's News Fast: Sept. 20

The Chippewa Valley superintendent weighs in on Lansing's proposed education reforms, a local pizza franchise looks to raise money for veterans and the Shelby-Macomb Daybreakers Kiwanis Club desperately seeks members. It's all in today's news.

We could see patchy fog before 8 a.m., but otherwise, the National Weather Service predicts mostly sunny skies all day, with a high near 71 degrees. The low will drop to around 57 degrees tonight. All in all, a fairly beautiful day.  A package of bills in the Michigan House and Senate proposes a series of educational reforms. However, how these bills will impact local school districts is a question administrators like Chippewa Valley Superintendent Ron Roberts are trying to answer. We asked Roberts to weigh in on these proposed reforms. The Shelby-Macomb Daybreakers Kiwanis Club is desperate for new members to help it continue its efforts in the local community. Shelby-Macomb Kiwanis in Need of Hands to Keep Up with Heart

The Shelby-Macomb Daybreakers Kiwanis Club is desperate for new members to help it continue its efforts in the local community.

The Shelby Macomb Daybreakers Kiwanis Club is living proof that with enough heart, anything is possible. Though its membership can be counted on one hand, the people touched by the Daybreakers' efforts each year number in the thousands. In just the next few months, the Daybreakers will participate in more than 10 fundraisers and events, including Coats for Kids, The Dictionary Program, the Harvest Time Walk and Salvation Army Bell Ringing. And though club members are used to doing more with less, club secretary Nancy Nevers said the group could do with a few more hands. "We desperately need new members," Nevers said. "We were never huge, but when you look at all that we have done with few people, very little press coverage and fanfare, …

Kiwanis Elves Answer Santa's Local Mail

Today is the last day local children can mail a letter to Santa and receive an answer courtesy of the Shelby-Macomb Daybreakers Kiwanis Club.

In this era of everyone trying to do more with less, even Santa Claus needs a little help. He knows how important it is to respond to the good girls and boys who write him letters, so he depends on the Shelby-Macomb Daybreakers Kiwanis Club to help him out. "That's what Kiwanis is all about, helping kids," said Judy Chambers, co-chair of the Answering Letters to Santa program.  Chambers points out that the organization's mission statement reads, "The Kiwanis Club is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one community and one child at a time." On top of that, Chambers adds, "it's fun for everyone involved." Today is the last day children can write and send a letter to Santa at the following sites: Brightly …
