Macomb Schools' MEAP Results Show Greatest Gains in Math, Struggles in Science

Utica Schools Will 'Pick Up the Pace' in Science, Digital Learning, Superintendent Says

Superintendent Dr. Christine Johns said recent 2012 MEAP results show a need to strengthen science instruction across the district.

Though pleased with overall student performance on the 2012 Michigan Educational Assessment Program, or MEAP test, Utica Community Schools’ superintendent says there is always room for improvement, namely in the area of science. “We’re pleased with the performance overall, specifically in the area of math, which showed increased growth in all grades,” said Superintendent Dr. Christine Johns. “If you look at numbers across the county, you’ll observe our performance is very consistent in all of our subject areas and we’re pleased about that.” According to results released Monday, Utica students scored above state average in every subject and grade level tested by the 2012 MEAP. Taken during fall 2012, the MEAP tests public school students in…

Macomb Schools' MEAP Results Show Greatest Gains in Math, Struggles in Science

Chippewa Valley, L'Anse Creuse and Utica outpaced statewide MEAP averages in most subjects in 2012. However, New Haven was generally unable to match state averages beyond its results in third grade math and reading.

For the most part, students in Chippewa Valley, L'Anse Creuse and Utica districts continued to perform on par or above their peers across the state in all subject areas, according to the recently-released results of the 2012 Michigan Educational Assessment Program, or MEAP test. New Haven students struggled to match state averages in all areas except third-grade math and reading. During the MEAP exam, taken during fall 2012, public school students in grades 3-9 were tested in math, reading, writing, social studies and/or science depending on the grade level. Across Michigan, students showed improvement in reading, math and writing in 2012, with the improvement seen in all grades and most demographic groups. Utica saw its greatest gains in …

Chippewa Valley, L'Anse Creuse, New Haven and Utica MEAP Results To Be Released Today

Check back with Macomb Patch at 10 a.m. Monday for a look at how students fared on their Fall 2012 Michigan Education Assessment Program exams.

Michigan students' MEAP results will be released Monday morning for students in Chippewa Valley, L'Anse Creuse, Utica and New Haven districts and in all public schools across the state. The results were scheduled to be released at 10 a.m. The Michigan Education Assessment Program exam assesses students in grades 3 through 9: The annual test is designed to show students' proficiency in career- and college-ready materials. The MEAP is administered by the Department of Education, which is releasing the data on Monday. The MEAP as a standard of measuring student achievement is on its way out; beginning in the 2014-15 school year, students will be given an online exam to test their knowledge of core subjects. Are Local Districts Ready for an All-Online MEAP Replacement?

Recent technology upgrades should allow most Macomb Township districts to test their students entirely online by 2014-15.

By 2014-15, the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) will be a thing of the past and Michigan students will be taking a new exam that is given entirely online.  Called Smarter Balanced, the exam was produced by The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, a state-led effort to provide consistent and comparable standards, aligned to the Common Core State Standards, in English language arts, literacy and mathematics. The new test will replace both the Michigan Merit Exam (MME) and the MEAP in all subjects except social studies and science. Although districts will have a paper and pencil option for the first three years, the state's goal is to have as many students as possible taking the test online by 2014-15. While a district does …

Michigan Department of Education Plans for New Online-Based Assessments

Changes will take place during the 2014-2015 school year.

Paper and pencil for statewide tests will soon be a thing of the past for Michigan students as they prepare to take a new online assessment detailed during a roundtable Monday by the Michigan Department of Education. The exam will replace the standardized MEAP and MME assessments in math, reading and writing, beginning during the 2014-2015 school year. The MEAP and MME assessments will still be given in science and social studies. But unlike the tests students are used to, the new statewide exam will not have a common set of questions. Subsequent questions will be determined based on how a student answers the previous one. A correct answer yields a harder one. An incorrect responce yields an easier question. The goal is to have students …

It would be great if the district actually used the scores to improve education, but they don't seem to. Everyone seems content with the status quo of overtesting. Our students are not learning better or given more enrichment. It is test after test.   more ›

Just the Facts: New Test to Replace MEAP

The new online assessment will replace the MEAP and MME tests in math, reading and writing beginning during the 2014-15 school year.

Beginning in the 2014-15 school year, students throughout Michigan will be given an online exam to test their knowledge of core subjects. The test replaces the Michigan Merit Exam (MME) and the Michigan Educational Assessment Progam (MEAP) in all subjects except social science and science. Called Smarter Balanced, the exam was produced by The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, a state-led effort to provide consistent and comparable standards, aligned to the Common Core State Standards, in English language arts, literacy and mathematics. Smarter Balanced recently released a Technology Readiness Tool for districts  to measure readiness to move to an online assessment program. Martineau said only about 6 percent of districts have taken …

National Move to Common Core Looks to Replace MEAP Test

Michigan's move toward a national curriculum will also bring a new set of tests to replace the MEAP and MME.

New cut scores are only the beginning of what promises to be a complete overhaul of the standardized tests students know as the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) and Michigan Merit Exam (MME).   With districts throughout the state on deadline to implement the common core curriculum in the next two years, Chippewa Valley Schools Executive Director of Elementary Education Sue Grenier said schools can expect entirely new tests by 2014-15.  These common core exams are set to replace the present-day MEAP and MME with tests better aligned to the college- and career-readiness standards taught through the common core curriculum. While the 2014-15 exams will cover English-language arts and mathematics, Grenier said some form of the …

L'Anse Creuse Schools Exceed 2011 State Math, Reading MEAP Scores

With few exceptions, L'Anse Creuse Public Schools posted higher scores on the 2011 MEAP than those recorded in state averages.

Exceeding the majority of state averages and previous years' scores, L'Anse Creuse Public Schools found fared fairly well on the 2011 MEAPs when results were released earlier this week.  "Our district scores were high in comparison to both the state and county at elementary and middle school in all content areas," said Lisa McFee, L'Anse Creuse director for curriculum and instruction. With the exception of fifth grade science and ninth grade social studies–in which the percentage of L'Anse Creuse students considered "proficient" (passing) was below the state average–L'Anse Creuse schools saw students excel in math, reading and writing across all grade levels. “Due to changes in the cut scores implemented by the Department of Education, …

Macomb Districts' 2011 MEAP Scores Stay Above State Average

Chippewa Valley, L'Anse Creuse and Utica saw their students stay on par with state averages in almost all 2011 MEAP subjects. New Haven's scores were below the state average in most areas.

At first glance, the 2011 MEAP scores released today for Macomb Township schools appear to have taken a nosedive from those of previous years. However, this apparent decline is actually a reflection of the state’s newly adopted cut scores. In September 2011, the State Board of Education adopted new cut scores, or performance measures, for the MEAP test that would better reflect how well schools are preparing students for each grade level and whether all Michigan students are progressing at the rate necessary for them to be career- and college-ready by high school graduation. These more rigorous cut scores were applied for the first time to the 2011 MEAP results released today, and retroactively applied to previous year’s results for …
