Jackie Johnston shares goals for her first 90 days and weighs in on the need for the district's pay-to-participate policy and involvement in schools of choice.
With day one behind her, Jackie Johnston is looking ahead to the meetings, celebrations and planning sessions she will face in her first 90 days as L’Anse Creuse Public Schools’ new superintendent. Appointed to the position on Feb. 13, May 1 was Johnston’s first official day as the district's sixth superintendent. That includes meeting …

Responding to L'Anse Creuse's announcement of a pay-to-participate program in 2012-13, New Haven Community Schools said it will continue to be an "exception" and not charge students for middle and high school athletics.
In light of L'Anse Creuse Public School's recent decision to implement a pay-to-participate program for high school and middle school sports, New Haven Community Schools is assuring parents it will not follow suit. On Thursday, the district released this statement in response to the L’Anse Creuse pay-to-play announcement, "New Haven Community Schools is an exception to the rule when it comes to charging parents for their athletes to play sports." “We know there’s no such thing as parents not paying for sports," said New Haven Superintendent Keith Wunderlich, in the statement. "Every sport has equipment parents buy as well as fund-raisers to help the sport. Even without a pay-to-play program, we know parents are paying." New Haven currently…

Attendance and participation for high-school athletics sports is on the rise at a time when deep budget cuts at schools have increased fees for students and cut athletic department staffing and budgets.
More students are participating in high school sports both nationally and in Michigan at a time when budgets cuts are eliminating athletic director positions and increasing the costs for parents, according to a blog post by Jack Roberts, the executive director of the Michigan High School Athletic Association. The blog cites a study by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFSHSA) that shows high school sports participation increased in 2010-11 versus the year before. It was the 22nd consecutive year of increases. The MHSAA story also says the NFSHSA conducted an attendance survey in 2009-10 that showed "there were more than a half billion spectators at high school sporting events across the country. There were more …
