President Barack Obama's proposal to redesign America's high schools to better train students for real-world jobs is a model already alive and well in Chippewa Valley Schools' career technical education program.
It was a Brooklyn high school that received recognition for its innovative technical education during the State of the Union Tuesday, but Clinton Township residents can find a model for the president’s proposed redesign of America’s high schools much closer to home. Chippewa Valley Schools is just one of several Macomb County districts that have, in recent years, moved to partner with institutions of higher education and integrate on-the-job training into their career technical education programs. “Right now, countries like Germany focus on graduating their high school students with the equivalent of a technical degree from one of our community colleges, so those German kids, they're ready for a job when they graduate high school,” said …

U.S. Rep. Candice Miller voiced opposition to several actions proposed by President Barack Obama in his 2013 State of the Union Tuesday.
The need to expand domestic energy production and innovation was one of the only topics addressed by President Barack Obama during his State of the Union Tuesday to receive support from U.S. Rep. Candice Miller (R-MI). Miller, who serves Michigan’s 10th congressional district, released a number of statements following Tuesday’s speech detailing her opposing view on issues ranging from state election rights to tax increases. Chief among her concerns was the president’s response to the ongoing “sequester” – a series of automatic, across-the-board budget cuts enacted into law in 2011 and due to take effect at the end of the month unless Congress passes a resolution to avoid it. “During tonight’s address to the nation, the President outlined …

There were several highlights during the inauguration ceremony. Tell us what you found to be most memorable.
President Barack Obama was sworn in today for a second term in office. The day was historic in that Obama is one of just a handful of men who have been re-elected to lead the United States. But also that his swearing in fell on the annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr's birthday and in the 50th anniversary year of King's March on Washington to deliver the "I Have a Dream" speech. Today's festivities included a 19-minute speech from the president in which he gave a shout out to southeast Michigan when he said, "Our journey is not complete until all our children from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for, and cherised, and always safe from harm." It also included …

In our first Blue Mitten survey, most respondents say they agree that President Barack Obama's support for the 2009 auto bailout will help him in Michigan in the November election.
Democratic Michigan insiders said President Barack Obama’s auto bailout will help his chances in the state in the November election: that’s the finding of this week’s inaugural Blue Mitten survey of influential Democrats. Twenty-nine Democrats from the southeastern Michigan area were asked using an automated survey tool what they thought about how the auto bailout will affect Obama’s standing among Democrats and independents in Michigan. Eighteen responses were collected. All of the respondents said they agree or somewhat agree the bailout will help Obama win over Democrats in Michigan. Obama and other Democrats have said the 2009 federal bailout of General Motors and Chrysler saved jobs. “His decisiveness on this issue is palpable …

During a last-minute visit to Utica Monday to speak to veterans at an American Legion Post 351, Arizona Sen. John McCain told supporters that the GOP would put better policies in place for veterans returning to civilian life.
While campaigning on behalf of Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney Monday at the American Legion Post 351 in Utica, Arizona Sen. John McCain slammed President Barack Obama for looming military cuts and a high unemployment rate for veterans. “There is a 14 percent unemployment rate for veterans nationwide,” said McCain, compared to an eight percent unemployment rate in the U.S. “We should be embarrassed,” he added. McCain, joined by Congresswoman Candice Miller (R-District 10), first held a round table discussion with eight people ranging from local veteran coordinators to military defense contractors. The 2008 GOP presidential nominee told the group that Obama’s “draconian cuts to military spending will not only affect the …

At 1:40 p.m. today, the president will make a public address asking Congress to take action on this issue. His remarks will be streamed live at WhiteHouse.gov/live.
On July 1, the interest rates of approximately 7.4 million students' federal loans are scheduled to double unless Congress and President Barack Obama agree to freeze the rate for at least another year. While both the Obama administration and Republican leaders agree the rate should be frozen at the current 3.4 percent, the two have been unable to reach a compromise on how to pay for the plan. Under a plan proposed and passed by the House in April, the interest rate freeze would be funded by cutting some $6 billion from Obama's preventative health care program. However, the White House has said it would veto such legislation as the proposed bill would take money from health programs that fund services like cancer screening and child …
