Goldfish Swim School originally planned to open a Macomb Township facility in 2012.
It's going to take another year for Goldfish Swim School to make its way to Macomb Township. While a franchise was originally intended to open in Macomb by the end of 2012, an associate at the Rochester location said late 2013 is now the tentative date for opening. Goldfish Swim School, which currently operates facilities in Ann Arbor, Birmingham, Grand Rapids, Farmington Hills, Okemos and Rochester, requires an 8,000 to 10,000-square-foot venue to accomodate its specialized 4-foot deep pool. In all Goldfish schools, the pool’s temperature is kept around 90 degrees and all chlorine is produced on-site. The schools are decorated with bright colors and designs to give the impression that students are in the Caribbean or some other tropical …

Big name national retailers take the spotlight on Black Friday as their deep price cuts pull in shoppers in droves. What about those mom-and-pop businesses all over Macomb Township and beyond that are the backbone of America’s economy? Just when do they get their day? That’s basically the question that was asked back in 2010 when the concept of Small Business Saturday was born. Small Business Saturday is “a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities,” the U.S. Small Business Administration explains on its website. American Express gets the credit for founding the shopping holiday, which got its official start on Nov. 27, 2010, according to the Small Business Saturday Facebook page. Celebrating its …

Known for its Michigan-made merchandise, one of the most diverse collections of local art is moving to Clinton Township this week with the opening of Art-is-in Market at The Mall at Partridge Creek. Opening the first Art-is-in Market in 2005, owner Debbie La Pratt said she has been nothing short of amazed by the reception customers have given the store’s Livonia and Novi locations over the past seven years. “We were going to only be open for two months,” La Pratt said of the first location in Laurel Park Place Mall. “We were pretty bare bones. There were 35 artists’ (works). We had a cash box and a manual MasterCard machine. We did very well and the customers were ecstatic. When we said we were going to be closing the doors in January, …
