Organizers of Run the Plank, Macomb Township's first 5K race, presented a check for $20,000 to the MISD Homeless Education Project Aug. 20.
It was with tears and a great deal of thanks that the Macomb Intermediate School District’s Homeless Education Liaison accepted a check for $20,000 from the organizers of Macomb Township’s first 5K race Monday. “That’s amazing,” said Kathy Kropf after getting her first glimpse of the five-digit check. “It is the biggest check we have ever received.” The check was a combination of donations and proceeds raised by “Run the Plank: 3 Miles of Faith,” the first community-wide event hosted by Macomb Township’s three churches – Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Isidore Catholic Church and St. Peter Lutheran Church. More than 900 runners and walkers participated in Macomb Township's first 5K Saturday, June 30, racing north on Romeo Plank Road from 21 Mile to 24 Mile Road.
Even before the first runners left the starting line, Run the Plank organizers proclaimed Macomb Township's first 5K an unprecedented success. "This day has been one of the dreams of mine for many, many years," said Immanuel Lutheran Church Associate Pastor Greg Griffith. "One of the greatest joys has been to see that one of the passions at Immanuel is also at St. Isidore and St. Peter ... It is a joy to see the unity of a community." The east lane of Romeo Plank Road between 21 Mile and 24 Mile roads will close today at 7:30 a.m. for the Run the Plank 5K race. It is expected to re-open completely by 9:30 a.m.
The east lane of Romeo Plank Road between 21 and 24 mile roads will close from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. today for Macomb Township's first Run the Plank 5K. The Macomb County Sheriff's Office will open Romeo Plank mile by mile as the race moves north, with the entire road expected to re-open by 9:30 a.m. Hosted by Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Isidore Catholic Church and St. Peter Lutheran Church, this community-wide run/walk is the first of its kind in Macomb and the first event on which the three parishes have collaborated. The 2012 St. Isidore Strawberry Festival runs Friday, June 22, through Sunday, June 24, and features raffles, nightly live music, kids activities, pasta and Polish dinners, a car show, talent show and Vegas room.

The first race and fund-raiser of its kind in Macomb Township, "Run the Plank" will also collect used shoes for Souls4Soles and use registration fees to benefit Macomb County's homeless education project.
With less than three weeks to race day, organizers of Macomb Township's Run the Plank 5K have registered just over 200 participants for the June 30 event. Because the event is only in its first year, organizers had set the event's registration cap at 1,500 runners, but are now hoping for 500 by race day.
