Resident and former candidate for township treasurer Thomas Christ says the township board should be more receptive to community input.
Former candidate for Macomb Township treasurer Thomas Christ says a large majority of residents are “apathetic to township government due to the belief that there is a lack of inclusiveness to (the point of) exclusion from any commentary or feedback from the board.” In addressing the board of trustees Aug. 22, Christ, who lost to Treasurer Karen Goodhue in the Aug. 7 primary, said he was concerned by the primary's low voter turnout and the fact that “less than 4,000 votes selected the leaders of this township for the next four years.” Christ attributed this low turnout to a feeling of exclusion among township residents. “When a resident gets up to speak they feel either ignored, ridiculed or just plain shut down,” Christ said. “I would ask…

Patch recently interviewed the seven candidates running for Macomb Township supervisor, clerk and treasurer to ask about their community involvement, qualifications for their chosen post and outside interests.
With 14 Republicans, and no Democrats, running for Macomb Township's seven board seats, the Aug. 7 primary could very well decide the outcome of the general election. Typically, if a candidate wins their primary, that means they have been nominated to represent their party in the general election. But if there is no opponent in the general election, their race in uncontested and they win by default. That is currently the case in Macomb Township. Macomb Patch recently spoke with Thomas Christ, the retired businessman and Macomb Township resident looking to become the community's next treasurer.
A 28-year Macomb Township resident, Thomas Christ, 61, is running for the position of township treasurer against incumbent Karen Goodhue. Should he be elected, Christ said one of his first acts will be to "push for a policy to be implemented that requires any issue to appear on the Township's Board of Trustees Agenda prior to any action or vote, thereby providing all residents with notice and opportunity to review and comment." Now retired, the father of two and grandfather of four said he spends much of his free time working as a volunteer mediator with The Resolution Center, a nonprofit that works with the state court system to assist individuals to craft their own settlement to disagreements that would otherwise require court action. …
