Businesses across Macomb County will be offering special discounts, freebies and offers exclusively for Veterans Day. Here is a list of Veterans Day 2012 specials you'll find on Hall Road and beyond. Special thanks to The Military Wallet, which continually updates this list for the benefit of the military community. Use this guide to find local services and memorials for Veterans Day. Here are some additional Veterans Day Discounts. In all cases, be sure to provide proper ID or proof of service. If you're looking for a way to honor those who have served, here is a roundup of ceremonies and services in Macomb County, ranging from a fundraiser to help a veteran's widow to city ceremonies and a 21-gun salute. Special events are planned throughout the weekend at Barnes & Noble to raise money for the Immanuel Lutheran School library and Piquette Square for Veterans.
Jump start your holiday shopping and support two good causes this weekend by visiting the Immanuel Lutheran School Book Fair at Barnes & Noble in Shelby Township. Proceeds from the book fair, slated for this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 10-11, benefit both the Immanuel Lutheran School library and Metro Detroit's homeless veterans. Pick up a new book or Nook, games, puzzles, an educational toy or puppet, and more items during the sale. In addition, shoppers can purchase soups, sandwiches, beverages, and desserts. Special events are scheduled throughout the weekend including a Bedtime Story Night, set for Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. Participants are encouraged to come in their pajamas and robes to hear stories read by Immanuel Lutheran …

The memorial, which stands in front of the Town Hall, features granite monuments commemorating nine branches of service, including that of police, fire, EMS and reserves. A Veterans Day celebration was held Nov. 10 at the center campus of Macomb Community College.
In honor of Veterans Day, Macomb Community College held a special ceremony Nov. 10 to recognize local members of the U.S. Armed Forces. The program included a 21-gun salute by the rifle squad of the Macomb County Detachment 154 Marine Guard, comments from Col. Ronald Shun of the U.S. Army, a moment of silence for the nation's fallen heroes and a special performance by Yates, Macomb's All-American Frisbee dog.

I always think about my grandfather on Veterans Day. He fought in France during World War II. When he came home, he did what any good Detroit-based GI did, went to work for General Motors and started a family of seven. :)   more ›
