Five students will continue their athletic careers on the college basketball court.
Five seniors from Dakota High School will live out their hoop dreams on the college basketball court. Miranda Bates, Kylie Churches, Olivia Savage, Kylie Townsley and Kyli Verduci all signed letters of intent at a ceremony at Dakota on May 7 to make their college plans official. Bates and Savage will play at Albion College; Churches will play at Siena Heights; Townsley will play at Spring Arbor; and Verduci will play at Calvin College.

Dakota High School was ranked as one of the top 2,000 public high schools in America by Newsweek magazine.
Dakota High School was listed as one of America's best high schools in 2013 by Newsweek magazine, according to The Daily Beast. The list, released Monday, ranked Dakota High School 1,774 out of 2,000 public high schools in America. All four high schools in the Utica Community Schools district also were on the list. The top three highest-ranked Michigan schools were International Academy (30) in Bloomfield Hills, Troy High School (134) in Troy and Okemos High School (287) in Okemos. Eighty-two public high schools in Michigan were on the list. The best high school in America was Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky in Bowling Green, KY, according to the list. Dakota's girls basketball team earned Macomb County team of the year honors at the newspaper's annual basketball awards dinner.
Team comes first at Dakota, and this year the Cougars were Macomb County’ top team. The Dakota girls basketball team earned team of the year honors at The Macomb Daily’s annual basketball awards dinner. “We always preached to our players how important it is to be a "team" throughout their time in our program,” Dakota coach Phil McCune said in an email. “This is a great reward!” Dakota won 20 games this season and claimed a Class A district championship, according to The Macomb Daily.

Senior helped Cougars reach state finals this year.
Marissa Solnik had a season to remember for the Dakota bowling team. Solnik helped the Cougars win a Division 1 regional team championship in late February. In addition, the senior also finished second at the individual regional tournament. Her score of 1,235 was just three pins behind regional champion Alyssa Meade of L’Anse Creuse North. By virtue of her strong showing in the regionals Solnik advance to the individual state finals, where she placed 20th with a six-game total of 1156 at the individual bowling state finals on March 2 in Muskegon. Nicole Mikaelian shined in individual competitions and helped the Cougars advance to the semifinals of the state tournament.
Nicole Mikaelian bowled them over this winter. A junior at Dakota High School, Mikaelian reached the semifinals of the Division 1 state bowling individual finals on March 2 in Muskegon. In addition Mikaelian helped the Cougars advance to the semifinals at the the state team finals on March 1. She also helped Dakota win the regional team title on Feb. 22 at Five Star Lanes in Sterling Heights. At the individual regional tournament, Mikaelian placed third with a score of 1217. Sessions on Monday and Tuesday at the Mount Clemens Ice Arena are open to eighth-, ninth-, 10th- and 11th-graders at Dakota.
Are you a student that loves hockey? Then skate with the Dakota High School hockey team this week at the Mount Clemens Ice Arena. The ice time is free for all interested eighth-grade students—as well as freshmen, sophomores and juniors at Dakota. The sessions will be held Monday, March 4, and Tuesday, March 5, from 4:30-5:50 p.m. All participants must fill out a waiver form. Olivia Savage scores 30 points to lead Cougars past Port Huron Northern 54-49 in Class A district championship game.
Congratulations to the Dakota High School girls basketball team. The Cougars captured a Class A district championship on Friday night by defeating Port Huron 54-49, according to the MHSAA. Olivia Savage scored 30 points to lead Dakota, according to the Macomb Daily. With the victory, Dakota improves its record to 19-3 overall and advances to a Class A regional semifinal game against Sterling Heights on Tuesday, March 5. The game will take place at Lake Shore High School at 7 p.m.
