Let There Be Lightscapes: Couple Crafts Creative Lamps

In our ongoing look at locally produced wares, we visit a Macomb couple that crafts and sells custom solar and electrical lightscapes as a part-time home business.

Mushroom fairies were all the rage last year, but dolphins seem to be the favorite for 2010, at least in the world of Gary and Sharon Schaffner, the owners of G & S Solar Lightscapes. The Schaffners, of Macomb Township, started crafting their "lightscapes"—ornate, handcrafted, sculptures that also function as lamps— in August 2009. "We haven't really been that talented, but I saw this concept at a garage sale and I decided to make my (wife) one," Gary said. So impressed with the gift, Sharon suggested Gary turn the craft into a small part-time business, and G & S Solar Lightscapes was born.
