L'Anse Creuse North Grad a "Hit" in the NHL

L'Anse Creuse North graduate Steven Oleksy has been signed by the Washington Capitals and already has made his mark in the NHL.

Steven Oleksy, a L'Anse Creuse North graduate and Chesterfield Township native, has been signed by the Washington Capitals and recently made a big "hit" in the NHL. In a video posted on YouTube, Oleksy took on fellow Michigan native Drayson Bowman of the Carolina Hurricanes March 12 in a fight. The Macomb County native  - in his first fight - showed he could be an enforcer for the Capitals.

L'Anse Creuse Boys Basketball Falls in OT

The Crusaders run in the MHSAA Boys Basketball Tournament ended Wednesday with an overtime loss to Detroit Southeastern.

The L'Anse Creuse North boys basketball season came to an end Wednesday at Grosse Pointe North in an overtime loss to Detroit Southeastern. The Crusaders took the Detroit Southeastern to overtime, but fell 54-49 in the regional final game. L'Anse Creuse North finishes the season 20-4.

L'Anse Creuse North Boys Basketball Tops Chippewa Valley in Regionals

L'Anse Creuse North boys basketball team defeated Chippewa Valley Monday to move on to the next round of the MHSAA state basketball tournament.

L'Anse Creuse North boys basketball team topped county rival Chippewa Valley 43-41 Monday in the MHSAA boys basketball tournament. The victory for L'Anse Creuse North (20-3) gives the team a shot for the regional championship at 6 p.m. Wednesday against Detroit Southeastern (17-5). The championship game will be played at Grosse Pointe North, according to MHSAA.com. Chippewa Valley finishes the season with a 13-10 record.

China Quiz Bowl Comes to L'Anse Creuse North

Fifth annual event that tests students knowledge of Chinese language, culture and geography will take play April 13.

L’Anse Creuse North will host the fifth annual Michigan China Quiz Bowl on April 13, according to a press release from Wayne State University. Sponsored by Confucius Institute at Wayne State University, the Michigan China Quiz Bowl tests high school and middle school students on their knowledge of Chinese language, geography and culture. An art contest also will be judged at the Michigan China Bowl. In addition, the Confucius Institutes at the University of Michigan and Wayne State will host a musical performance during the event. More than 250 students from 17 schools competed in last year’s event, according to John Brender, the director of the Confucius Institute. It Takes Spanish III to Tango at L'Anse Creuse North

Students show their moves as they experience first-hand the lessons they have learned in class.

Quick, quick, slow. Those are the steps some L’Anse Creuse North students learned as they took tango lessons as part of their Spanish III class. “It’s a great opportunity for students to experience first-hand some of the stuff we’ve been talking about,” Spanish teacher Elaine Siegle said on a video posted on the school district’s YouTube channel. LCN, Dakota Gear Up for Hoops Clash

The two girls basketball teams will play in the Class A district semifinals on Wednesday.

Two high school girls basketball teams from Macomb Township will square off in the Class A district tournament on Wednesday night. L’Anse Creuse North, the co-champion of the MAC Blue Division, will take on host Dakota High School in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Both teams have 17-3 overall records. Dakota placed second in the MAC Red Division. The winner of the game will advance to the district championship game on Friday at 6 p.m. at Dakota High School.

Dakota Girls Win Bowling Regional Crown

Alyssa Meade of L'Anse Creuse North won the girls individual regional championship.

The Dakota High School girls bowling team won a Division 1 regional championship this weekend at Star Lanes, according to MHSAA. Meanwhile, both the boys and girls bowling teams from L’Anse Creuse North advanced to the state championship. The LCN boys finished second at the regional at Star Lanes, and the girls were third. In the girls team tournament, Dakota finished first with 3,865 points. Sterling Heights Stevenson was second with 3,683, and L’Anse Creuse North was third with 3,559. All three will advance to next weekend’s state finals at Northway Lanes in Muskegon. In the boys team tournament, L’Anse Creuse North placed second with 4,144 points. LCN to Host First ‘Dave Jackson Tip-Off Classic’ to Support 4-School Scholarship Fund

The Dec. 15 series will feature match-ups between the varsity boys and girls basketball squads of L'Anse Creuse, L'Anse Creuse North, Cardinal Mooney and Richmond high schools.

As an educator and coach, former L’Anse Creuse High School North Principal Dave Jackson was a strong supporter of students. Although Jackson passed away last February, his memory and unwavering support promises to live on through a scholarship fund established in his name. “I think anyone you talk to will tell you about his great character,” said LCN varsity boys basketball coach Jay Seletsky. “He walked the walk, got his hands dirty and supported everybody. His impact was bigger than even education as a whole. Crusader Athletes Recruited to Dive, Play Basketball at College Level

L'Anse Creuse North basketball player Tyler Conklin and diver Taylor Zablocki will head to Northwood University and the University of Alabama, respectively, next fall.

Athletes Tyler Conklin and Taylor Zablocki are the latest members of Crusader Nation to be recruited to take their respective talents to the college level. L'Anse Creuse North senior Conklin has committed to play basketball for Northwood University, in Midland, MI, next fall. The 6'4"-point guard/shooting guard was the leading scorer for the Crusaders last season and was instrumental in helping his team to the Class A boys basketball semifinals in March 2012. Northwood plays in the GLIAC Division II. The team is lead by Head Coach Jeff Rekeweg, who said he selected Conklin as his top recruit for his versatility and work ethic. LCN Band to March in Santa Parade Today; Local Soldier Serves as Grand Marshall

Sgt. Davin Dumar, Lutheran North alumnus and veteran of the war in Afghanistan, will serve as this year's Grand Marshall for the Mount Clemens Santa Parade.

With the Crusader Marching Band, Macomb Township Fire Department and a local soldier all taking part, Macomb looks to be well represented in this year's Mount Clemens Santa Parade. The 2012 event will kick off at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 23 on Main Street at Church Street. Lead by Grand Marshall and Lutheran North alumnus Sgt. Davin Dumar, the parade will proceed north to Market Street. Wounded by an IED in the war in Afghanistan, Dumar and his family will be the recipients of a new home in Macomb Township, courtesy of Operation Finally Home and music megastar Kid Rock, next year.
